Jewellery Care
18K Gold Plated
18K plated jewellery is made with a thin layer of gold. The gold layer is often put on a base metal such as silver, stainless steel, or brass, however makers may use other materials.
The purpose of acquiring gold-plated jewellery is to get the look and feel of real gold at a lower cost.
While plated jewellery may be less durable than real gold, it can still last a long time with careful care. Plated jewellery is typically less expensive than real gold, making it a popular choice for people looking to accessorise without breaking the bank.
When purchasing jewellery, it's important to evaluate the quality and durability of the materials.
Gold jewellery has been popular for ages, providing as a timeless design statement that has never gone out of style. However, it can be costly, therefore modern jewellery designers have developed an alternative: gold-plated jewellery. Gold plated jewellery is often comprised of a gold with base metals being stainless or titanium steel with a thin plating coating on the surface.
The plating makes it sparkle like genuine gold jewellery, but at a lower cost. Furthermore, gold-plated jewellery is less expensive than traditional gold jewellery since it requires less gold. With a wide range of styles available, gold-plated jewellery is ideal for those who enjoy the look of gold but do not want to pay the high price.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel jewellery is a steel alloy containing at least 10.5% chromium by mass and up to 1.2% carbon by mass. Stainless steel is naturally resistant to tarnishing and rusting.
Jewellery made of stainless steel or the base metal of 18K gold plating will be water resistant, but as with any jewellery, it is preferable to prevent contact with chemicals to keep its brilliance.
Sterling Silver
Silver has a softer structure and therefore the delicate structure makes it tough to process in different designs. Silver must be combined with other metals, usually copper, to give it the hardness required for processing.
925 Sterling Silver contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
Silver is a costly and delicate material and should be taken good care, such as putting jewellery pieces into a closed box away from the light when not in use.
